Munich’s first botanical gardens were established in 1812 and were originally located between Stachus square and the central station, a park now known as Alter Botanischer Garten (“former botanical gardens”). However, in a short time there was no place left in the city center, so in 1914 new botanical gardens were established in Nymphenburg. This new botanical garden is an important working place for gardeners and botanists.
There are two different areas: the outdoor area spread over a 21-hectare garden and almost 15 greenhouses. The greenhouses are made like a labyrinth; you can move from one greenhouse to another without ever going out, and the temperature inside the greenhouses is increasing. Palm trees, orchids, cacti and bright butterflies make it feel like a movie scene. The entire botanical garden is home to about 19,600 species and subspecies. They say it would take weeks if you wanted to travel around the world to see these different species in place.
