Good Instagram Guide for Lisbon

Let’s face it, we all look for the picture-perfect photo to post on our social media accounts while travelling. If you’re planning a visit to Lisbon, you’re lucky, because “that” photo is not far away. In this this pastel-colored, nearly untouched, authentic and beautiful city, what you’re looking for will be handed to you on a silver platter.

I mapped out 10 outstanding photography locations; feel free to navigate yourself around them. You may want to look them from a different angle, the famous Lisbon light will do the job.

1. Chiado

This particular photo is now hanged on the wall in our house. You’ll find it easily while walking to the main square in Chiado; impossible to miss.

2. Tram Routes

Trams are everywhere in Lisbon. Whenever you hear the buzzing in the street you need to stay on the side to allow it to pass. Or you can do like me and jump on the tram route to get a photo. My guide on Lisbon Tram’s Guide is – here.

3. Park Bar

A beautiful terrace bar with a vibrant atmosphere. Cheers to the best view with an Aperol!

4. Pequeno Jardim

A beautiful flower shop with its original signage. Don’t forget to spend some time inside the shop as well.

5. Embaixada

One of the coolest concept stores in Lisbon. Re-built within a 19th century palace.

6. The Fado Mural: Fado Vadio

The famous mural is a tribute to Fado music; where the famous Fado musicians Maria Severa and Fernando Maurício are portrayed together with the other symbols of the music like bread and wine. The mural is close to the neighborhoods of Mouraria and Alfama, birthplace of this World Heritage music.

7. Casa do Alentejo

A 17th century palace, representing Alentejo region in Portugal with its Moorish design.

8. Livraria Ler Devagar

The big library of LX Factory. Even though you might have seen hundreds of photos of this place, you might still have a chance to photograph it from a different angle.

9. Alfama Neighbourhood

Labyrinth narrow streets and small squares of the oldest neighborhood in Lisbon: Alfama. You’ll see the mix of urban art and traditional living, an extraordinary synthesize.

10. The Miradouros

They call Lisbon “The City of Seven Hills”; and on the hills, Portuguese people built Miradouros – the view points – to watch the sea and city underneath. Everyone has a favorite Miradouro; mine was Portas do Sol.

Picturesque Lisbon: Good Trams Guide

Once you’re in Lisbon, you’ll realize it’s like none of the European capitals. I always tend to walk everywhere when I am in Europe, somedays I hit 20km’s in my Iphone’s health application; and I bet you’re the same! I had the same intentions when we landed to Lisbon but I quickly realized that it is not going to happen.

The city is built on seven hills, makes you walk up and down – which can be very exhausting. But hey, this is what the trams are for!

Apart from trams ability to ease wandering around Lisbon, I fell in love with the movie scenes they create within the city. Old trams are called Remodelado trams; and they date back to 1930s! In city center, they are still the main transport vehicle.

At first, we became obsessed with taking the “perfect tram photo”. Once we saw a tram line, we stopped, waited for the tram to pass and prayed for no cars to interfere to the setting. Afterwards we realized they are part of everyday Portuguese life and tried to act cool 😊

Tram E28

The most popular route is E28, because you have the chance to see the neighbourhoods from Graca to Alfama. It’s very hard to find a seat in the tram between 10am-6pm; it’s better to take it from first or second stop. Route is: Martim Moniz – Graca – Portas de Sol – Se Cathedral – Rua Conceição – Chiado – Sao Bento – Estrela – Campo Ourique. I recommend you hop on from Graca.

Elevador da Bica

Apart from tram 28; I also loved Elevador Da Bica. It has one of the most iconic routes; river at the other end makes a perfect background for your trip.

Elevador da Glória

Elevador da Glória connects Baixa to Bairro Alto. You’ll need to ride in it because two neighborhoods are very close to explore, but roads connecting them are very steep. If you’re looking to capture the beauty of these trams in one photo, wait for 2 of them to get close. It looks like they are dancing.

Lizbon’un Tramvay Rehberi

Lizbon’dayken, buranın diğer Avrupa başkentlerine benzemediğini anlayacaksın. Avrupa’dayken her zaman yürümeye özen gösteririm hatta bazı günlerde Iphone’un sağlık uygulamasında 20 km’ye kadar çıktığımı görmüşümdür ve bahse girerim sen de aynısın! Lizbon’a geldiğimde de aynı niyetteydim ama bunun mümkün olmadığını çabucak fark ettim.

Şehir yedi tepe üzerine inşa edildiği için aşağı, yukarı ve tekrar aşağı şeklinde gezmek oldukça yorucu.

Ama süper bir çözümü var: tramvaylar!

Tramvayların, Lizbon çevresinde dolaşmayı kolaylaştırmak dışında, şehir içinde yarattığı film karelerine ayrı aşık olmuştum. Şehir merkezinde, hala ana ulaşım aracı olan eski bu tramvaylara, Remodelado tramvayları deniyor ve tarihi 1930’lara kadar uzanıyor!

İlk başta, “mükemmel tramvay fotoğrafını” çekene kadar inat ettik. Her tramvay hattı gördüğümüzde durduk, tramvayın geçmesini bekledik ve araçların önünü kesmemesi için dua ettik. Sonrasında, Portekiz’in günlük yaşamının bir parçası olduklarını fark ettik ve cool takılmaya çalıştık. Lizbon tramvay güzergahlarını ve şehrin gezilecek yerlerini arıyorsan favorilerimi aşağıda bulabilirsiniz.

En popüler rota E28, çünkü Graça’dan Alfama’ya kadar olan tüm mahalleleri görme şansınız var. Tramvayda 10:00 – 18:00 arasında yer bulmak çok zor; ilk veya ikinci duraktan binmek daha iyi gibi.

Rota: Martim Moniz – Graca – Portas de Sol – Se Katedrali – Rua Conceição – Chiado – Sao Bento – Estrela – Campo Ourique. Son olarak Graca’dan inip gezmenizi tavsiye ederim.

Ayrıca 28 numaralı tramvay, Hello, Kristof ve The Mill kahve dükkanlarının bulunduğu Rua do Poço dos Negros’tan da geçiyor. Kahvenizi yudumlarken tramvayları izlemek rüya gibi.

28 numaralı Tramvay dışında; Elevador Da Bica‘yı da ayrıca çok sevdim. Nehir gezisi için mükemmel bir arka plana sahip ikonik rotalardan biri.

Elevador da Glória, Baixa’yı, Bairro Alto’ya bağlıyor. Ona binmeniz gerekecek çünkü iki mahalle birbirine yakın olmasına rağmen onları birbirine bağlayan yollar oldukça dik. Bu tramvayların güzelliğini bir fotoğrafta yakalamak istiyorsan, 2 tanesinin yaklaşmasını bekleyin. Dans ediyor gibi görünüyorlar.

Olá Lisbon!

At first glance, Lisbon seems like any other European capital. Wait until you wake up on the third day! You start feeling that this place has something different than others. It‘s vibrant yet calm; no one is in a rush. Streets are empty in the morning, floating at night. Within all Lisbon guides, I wanted to show you a little glimpse of us and some random Lisbon beauty I snapped while wandering on the streets.

You’ll never get bored of shooting photos in front of colorful doors and tiles, that’s for sure! After some point, you’ll get used to them and stay cool.We stayed at an Airbnb apartment in “Principe Real”. It’s a trendy neighborhood to stay with lots of entertainment around. You may also prefer staying at the very heart of old town “Barrio Alto” but it can get very noisy at nights.

This was the view of our AirBnb..Before coming here, I thought people were exaggerating about Pasteis de Nata: How come a simple dessert can be so good? Apologies for my questioning! It’s simply to die for! We ate at least 5 natas each day. The best one was at Manteigaria. Not everyone knows, so shh.

Another must-visit place is Park Bar. Actually, its a bit hard to find because you expect a proper door to enter. It’s a terrace bar located at the top floor of a car-park, so you should climb around cars to get there. It has a pretty nice setting with nice people. We really enjoyed it (read it from our faces☺).

Lisbon, we won’t be getting over you soon!

Merhaba Lizbon!

İlk bakışta, Lizbon diğer her Avrupa başkenti gibi. Üçüncü günün akşamı fikrim değişiyor. Bu şehrin diğerlerinden kesinlikle farklı bir havası var. Canlı ama hayat yavaş akıyor; kimse acele etmiyor. Sokaklar sabah boş, geceleri ise dopdolu. Tüm Lizbon rehberlerinde olan önerilerden ziyade, sana sokaklarda dolanırken yakaladığım rasgele bir takım Lizbon güzelliklerini göstermek istedim.

Renkli kapıların ve farklı desenlerdeki seramiklerin önünde fotoğraf çekmekten asla sıkılmıyorsun. Bu görsel şölene alışman birkaç gün sürüyor, sonra içinden ne kadar harika olduğunu geçirip, yürümeye devam ediyorsun.

Biz “Principe Real” de bir Airbnb dairesinde kaldık. Etrafında birçok eğlence yeri, butik olan, aynı zamanda şehirlilerin de kaldığı bir mahalle. “Principe Real” dışında eski şehir “Barrio Alto”nun kalbinde de kalmayı tercih edebilirsiniz, ancak geceleri çok gürültülü olabilir.

Buraya gelmeden önce, insanların “Pasteis de Nata” hakkında abarttığını düşünmüştüm. İlk ısırıktan sonra bu düşüncem için kendimden utandım! Her gün en az 5 nata yedik. En iyisi Manteigaria’daydı. Herkes bilmiyor, genelde nata için “Belem” pastanesini deniyor, bu yüzden aramızda kalsın 🙂

Ziyaret edilmesi gereken başka bir yer ise Park Bar. Yerini bulmak biraz zor çünkü basbayağı bir tabela ve kapı görmeyi bekliyorsun. Google Maps’e bakıyoruz, doğru yerde görünüyoruz, ama tabela falan yok. O an yanımıza biri geldi, “Park Bar”ı mı arıyorsunuz dedi, ve bizi önünde durduğumuz otoparkın en üst katına çıkardı! Burası, adına da uygun olarak bir otoparkın terasına yerleşmiş bir bar. Güzel insanlarla oldukça hoş bir ortama sahip. Biz gerçekten zevk aldık (fotoğraftaki suratımızdan da anlamışsındır.).

Lizbon, yakın sürede seni unutamayacağımız kesin!

Morning Coffee in Lisbon

Lisboetas have special ties with their coffee culture. They generally use robusta-arabica blends, which make coffee bitter and tough due to over roasted beans. Traditionally, the day starts with “galao” at breakfast, espresso with steamed milk. After launch, Lisboetas seek for “bica”, Portuguese espresso.

Of course, not everyone can be fond of bitter coffee, that’s why while 3rd coffee culture started evolving all around the world, Lisbon started to have its share.

I am listing below my favorites, good coffee shops in Lisbon where you can also enjoy delicious breakfast.

Hello Kristof

Within all authenticity and fuss in Lisbon, you’ll find “Hello, Kristof” like a bright and calm Scandinavian coffee house. It has a minimal and rough interior décor; a good place to relax and spend some quality time.

We went there for breakfast. Croissant and coffee was heavenly. Especially, coffee was very different than rest of Lisbon; the owner explains that he preferred beans that were more acidic and full of flavor.

He worked as a graphic designer and he was a magazine art director, so the concept has shaped around that. You’ll find impressive independent magazines at the shelves.

Heim Café

I love urban jungle style small coffee shops, they feel very lively and cosy. Heim is like that and it’s no coincidence that “heim” means “home” in German.

We ordered the classic brunch menu with sunny side eggs. On top, the French Toast to boost energy (since you’ll have to walk up and down in the city all day).

The Mill

If you’re following me for some time now, you’ll know I have this thing for Aussie style brunch. Give me avocados, poached eggs, fresh bowls and I’ll smile non-stop.

At The Mill, they serve best Portuguese ingredients within Aussie recipes, so you’ll have the best combination. They serve brunch in the morning and wine in the afternoon. You can also stop by The Mill to taste Portuguese wine within their vast wine selections.

For good coffee in Lisbon, I have one more recommendation for you: Copenhagen Coffee Lab. It’s the Lisbon branch of the famous coffee shop in Copenhagen, which sets your expectations very high. Trust me, you’ll be pleased. We had a take away, unfortunately I didn’t take any photos but if you want to check it out here is the link.

Lizbon’da Sabah Kahvesi

Lizbonluların kahve kültürüyle özel bir bağı var. Genellikle, kahve çekirdekleri ve çifte kavrulmuş olmasından dolayı sert olan robusta-arabica karışımlarını kullanıyorlar. Geleneksel olarak güne, kahvaltıda “gala”, buharlı sütlü espresso, içerek başlıyorlar. Öğleden sonra ise, “bica” yani Portekizliler’in esspresso’su ile devam ediyorlar.

Tabii ki, herkes kahveyi acı sevmez. Bu yüzden 3. kahve kültürü dünyanın her yerinde gelişmeye başlarken, Lizbon da bundan nasiplendi. Lizbon’da, hem iyi kahve hem de lezziz kahvaltı için benim önerilerim burda:

Lizbon’un daracık sıkışık sokakları, arnavut kaldırımları arasında minimalist ve sakin bir İskandinav havası: “Hello, Kristof”. Sabah kahveni Lizbon’un genç ve havalı sakinleri ile içmek için ideal bir mekan. Sahibi grafik tasarımcısı ve sanat yönetmeni; yaratıcı işini dükkanına da taşımış. Raflarda bağımsız dergiler bulabilirsiniz.

Heim Café

Şehirde yer alan urban jungle tarzı küçük kahve dükkanlarını çok seviyorum, çok ferah ve rahat oluyorlar. Heim de bunlardan biri. Almanca’da “heim” in “ev” anlamına gelmesi tesadüf değil tabiki.

Göz yumurta ile klasik bir brunch menüsü sipariş ettim. Üstüne, Fransız Tostu enerjiyi ayrıca artırıyor. (Çünkü tüm gün, şehirde bir yukarı bir aşağı yürümen gerekecek).

The Mill

Eğer bir süredir beni takip ediyorsan, Avusturalya tarzı brunchı sevdiğimi biliyorsundur. Bana her zaman avokado, poşe yumurta ve taze meyve-sebzelerin olduğu kaseler verebilirsin!

The Mill de, en iyi Portekiz ürünleri ile Avusturalya tarifleri hazırlayarak en iyi kombinasyonu elde etmiş. Sabahları brunch ve öğleden sonraları şarap servisi yapıyorlar. The Mill’in engin şarap menüsünde, Portekiz şarabının tadına bakmanı tavsiye ederim.

Lizbon’da iyi bir kahve için, son bir önerim daha var: Copenhagen Coffee Lab. Kopenhag’daki meşhur kahve dükkanının Lizbon şubesi, beklentilerini çok yükselttim farkındayım ama güven bana, memnun kalacaksın.

Good Food in Lisbon

For food lovers, Lisbon has been always considered to be a heaven with its top quality & fresh sea food, good cheese and tasty wines. In the recent years with the new openings and new generation of entrepreneurial chefs, dining in Lisbon has got even better.

It’s no secret that we (me & Uzcan) travel mostly for food, and our trip to Lisbon was no different. I listed our top 5 Lisbon restaurants here, don’t end your trip before trying at least 2 of these:

TAPISCO

Created by Chef Henrique Sá Pessoa, Tapisco is a restaurant celebrating both Portuguese and Spanish cuisines. Some dishes represent Catalan heritage and infused with Portuguese.

You also can’t miss cocktail menu! Besides “Old Fashioned” and “Principe”, try varieties of vermut that go very well with tapas on the menu.

Crowd in Tapisco is very friendly and welcoming, expect long dinner tables with laughter.

BAIRRO DO AVILLEZ

Another brilliant chef restaurant. José Avillez is an entrepreneurial chef; he has different restaurants/bars/cafes scattered around the city.

Within Bairro do Avillez, there are 5 different restaurants: Merceria, Taberna, Pateo, Beco and Cantina Peruana. Merceria is a gourmet deli with good cheese and wine. Taberna offers surprising shared food around the table. Pateo has deliciously fresh sea food. Beco is one-of-a-kind experience; fine dining meets theatre and shows. You should book in advance. And Cantina Peruana is dedicated to Peruvian cuisine.

We tried Pateo; giant red shrimp and squidink paella on the menu quickly became our favorite.

A TABERNA DA RUA DAS FLORES

Typical Portuguese food with simple twists. There are 6-8 items on the menu, and they change every day. Even daily menu changes from launch to dinner. House wine is a must try. Don’t forget to bring cash, they don’t accept credit cards.

SEA MEA

Sea Mea in Bairro Alto is a modern fish shop where you’ll find high quality fish & shellfish and also really good sushi.

The restaurant has its own fish farms in the Ria Formosa. When you enter, the waitress takes you to the fresh fish stand; you select the one you want and they cook it for you. They have nearly everything that old traditional fish restaurants in Lisbon offer.

Their specialty is “Nigiri de Sardinha”. You’ll be amazed how such simple dish can be insanely delicious. Trick must be the ingredient!

A CEVICHERIA

Hot spot in Principe Real! Whenever we passed by, there was always a que outside of the restaurant, with people drinking Pisco Sour – one of their signature cocktails.

It’s a restaurant that combines Portuguese inspiration with Peruvian cuisine, created by Chef Kiko Martins. You have to try Ceviche Puro (which you’ll see in the photo); it’s made of white fish, sweet potato puree, onion, algae and tiger’s milk (ceviche broth). That doesn’t taste like anything that we’ve tried before, you’ll want to eat it all the time!

Tapisco

Chef Henrique Sá Pessoa tarafından yaratılan Tapisco, Portekiz ve İspanyol mutfaklarını bir araya getiren enfes bir restoran. Bazı yemekler Portekiz ile aşılanmış Katalan mirasını temsil ediyor.

Ayrıca kokteyl menüsünü kaçıramamalısın! “Old Fashioned” ve “Principe”nin yanı sıra, menüde tapasla çok iyi giden vermut çeşitleri denenmeli.

Tapisco’daki kalabalık ortam, güler yüzlü ve misafirperver servis elemanları, uzun yemek masaları insanın içini sıcacık yapıyor.

Bairro do Avillez

Bir başka yetenekli şef restoranı. Girişimci şef José Avillez’in; şehrin bir çok noktasında bulunan farklı restoran, bar ve kafeleri mevcut.

Bairro do Avillez’de 5 farklı restoran bulunuyor: Merceria, Taberna, Pateo, Beco ve Cantina Peruana. Merceria, iyi peynir ve şarabıyla gurme bir şarküteri. Taberna, masanın etrafında sürpriz atıştırmalıklar bulunduruyor. Pateo’nun lezzetli taze deniz ürünleri var. Beco, eşsiz bir deneyim; güzel yemek eşliğinde tiyatro ve şovlara şahit oluyorsun. Yalnız önceden rezervasyon yaptırmalısın. Ve Cantina Peruana, Peru mutfağına adanmış bir mekan.

Biz Pateo’yu denedik; menüdeki dev kırmızı karides ve squidink paella hemen favorimiz oldu.

A TABERNA DA RUA DAS FLORES

Basit dokunuşlarla farklılaştırılmış tipik Portekiz yemekleri. Menüde 6-8 kadar yemek var ve her gün değişiyor. Günlük menü bile öğleden ile akşam yemeği arasında değişebilir. Ev şarabını mutlaka denemelisiniz. Kredi kartını kabul etmedikleri için yanınızda nakit bulundurmayı unutmayın.

SEE MEA

Bairro Alto’daki Sea Mea, yüksek kaliteli balık ve kabuklu deniz ürünleri ile gerçekten iyi suşi bulabileceğiniz modern bir balıkçı.

Restoranın Ria Formosa’da kendi balık çiftliği var. Girdiğinizde garson sizi taze balık standına götürüyor; siz istediğinizi seçiyorsunuz onlar da sizin için pişiriyorlar. Lizbon’daki eski geleneksel balık lokantalarında olan tüm ürünlere hatta daha fazlasına sahipler.

Uzmanlık alanları “Nigiri de Sardinha”. Böylesine sade bir yemeğin nasıl delice lezzetli olabileceğine şaşıracaksın.

CEVICHERIA

Principe Real’in en sıcak atmosferli noktası! Ne zaman önünden geçsek, restoranın önünde Pisco Sour (imza kokteyllerinden biri) içen insanlardan oluşan kuyruk vardı.

Şef Kiko Martins Peru mutfağı ile Portekiz esintilerini birleştirmiş Cevicheria’da. Ceviche Puro‘yu denemek zorundasınız; alabalık, tatlı patates püresi, soğan ve yosun var içinde. Daha önce denediğimiz hiçbir şeye benzemiyor, tadını asla unutamıyoruz.
